I hate to use the term "Benchwarmers" when it comes to talking about player on the Celtics But face it, we have two or three guys that are going to see very little playing time this year. J.R Giddens, Shelden Williams, Lester Hudson, and Mike Sweetney if he makes the team, just to name a few. Basically these guys are just back up plans incase of any injuries, and at the most will be seeing 10 minutes a game in major blowouts. My question is, Would it be a good idea to send one or two of these guys to the D-League each week to get them running up and down the floor in a game? Or Would this hurt their self confidence in playing in a "less talented' league?
I think that it would be a great idea for a guy like J.R Giddens to go to the Red Claws and play a few games a month. Then put him back on the 15 man roster and see how he does on the NBA court. Simply sitting on the bench watching all 82 games could make a player rusty when he does get his chance to prove himself.
This would also help raise attendance at Red Claws games with a familiar NBA caliber player being there, I know I am more likely to buy a ticket if one of these guys are playing.
Playing against D-League talent could also spark player's confidence. If a guy could go down there and drop big numbers each and every game then he can say "I still got it". This could make him work harder during the offseason to become a legitimate player in the NBA.
Again these are just my thoughts, and I may have a bit of prejudice because I am from Maine and would like to see NBA talent for ten dollar admission. Let me know what you think, Is this a good or bad idea?
