There have been reports that the Boston Celtics organization is in somewhat of a financial hole. This story came out after the Big Baby incident, and Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said he planned on getting something back from Big Baby's contract. Many media sources took this as a sign that the team might be in trouble financially.
Yesterday Wyc told WEEI, via email, that he is not worried about the team's financial situation. All you have to do is look at what took place on Monday for an explanation. If the Celtics were really in a financial hole do you really think they would have signed Rajon Rondo to a 55 million dollar extension, making him one of the highest paid point guards in the league? The answer is no. If money was such a concern the Celtics would not have given Rondo exactly what he wanted in terms of money.
Wyc also takes time in the email to thank the fans and sponsors of the team for all that they do:
“On the contrary, we are on course to set a new record for revenues thanks to our fantastic fan support and support from our sponsors and broadcast partners,” he told WEEI.com via email. “We appreciate everything they have done to support the team.”
The key words in that quote are "fantastic fan support". If anyone has been watching NBA games outside of the Celtics this year, you can easily notice that many, if not most places are not coming close to selling out. Look at the Charlotte Bobcats for example, do you think that organazation can truly put a competing team on the floor when the arena isn't even half full? No they can't, and the reason we are able to witness a great basketball team is because of the continued support from the greatest fans in sports.
So if the Celtics go on to win 70+ games it is because of us, the fans. If it was not for the continued support and sell-outs we would not have the team we have today. If you truly want the Celtics to be a threat for years, make sure to give your full support to the team for years to come. When the Celtics are raising banner 18 in October think to yourself, this one is for me.
