What's The Deal With Perk?

After bragging, and bragging, and bragging, about how great of a one on one defender Kendrick Perkins was, he has been letting me down. This whole offseason I talked about how he was the best one on one defending Center in the league. At this moment I may be choking on my words. His defense for the majority of this year has been average to say the least.

In last nights game against the Dallas Mavericks, Kendrick Perkins allowed Erick Dampier to go off for 11 points in the 3rd quarter. This was a huge reason the Mavs went on such a run. He is playing these guys so soft. The weakest Centers in the league are taking "The Beast" and slapping him all around the floor. In this month alone, Chris Bosh, Al Horford, and Erick Dampier have made Perkins look like a rookie. These are the matchups you expect him to shut these guys down.

Is it due to his lost weight, that he has been trying to find a new way to guard guys? I don't know, I wish I could say that but these 3 guys we are talking about are good examples of why he should have slimmed down. He isn't being physical enough, he is allowing himself to get backed down, and his quickness isn't making up for it. If he can take Dwight Howard and shut him down in a 7 game series, he should be able to close these guys out for 4 quarters. I will look for him to improve on this defense, for if he doesn't, we have lost a key aspect to our team that was a huge part of our success last year.

I think in the last few games Perk hasn't been very aggressive. I think he has been trying to stay out of foul trouble. Hopefully when KG gets back Perk will get back to his normal role and be an enforcer again.
