When Does The Blame Shift To Doc Rivers?

Posted by GreenBanner18 on February 26, 2010 at 10:48 AM

It is always easy to sit there and blame all of the players on the court who are not getting the job done. But, there is someone who heads this team, and has been making some very questionable decisions as of late. I know its easy for us to sit back in our home and tell the head coach of the Boston Celtics what he should be doing, but I think there are some things going on that should be changed.

As was posted by Brandon on Hardwood Houdini, Shelden Williams is getting zero playing time. Ever since Glen Davis has returned from his injury, Willliams has gone into hiding after playing above average minutes in his role to start the season. Williams provides good energy, and plays his tail off everytime he is in the game. Although he may not know where he is supposed to be at times, neither does Sheed. Sheed is a lost cause right now. He has no effort, and just when you think he has learned, he hasn't. Just when you think he is about to play hard, he isn't.

What stuck out to me in last nights game against the Cavs was when Cleveland was starting to finish off their comeback, and Lebron James drove to the hoop in the closing seconds of the third quarter. James telegraphed exactly what he was doing from the three point line. At the point I saw him driving, I thought to myself, "This is going to be a charge." Wallace did a great job to disprove this theory, as he relied on, like he usually does, to hacking the living crap out of the opposing player, instead of stepping in like a man and taking the charge. There is nothing more deflating than that to close out a quarter.

Now onto the Nate Robinson experiment that is unfolding. PLAY HIM. I don't understand it. He comes in, puts in 6 quick points on a foul shot, three pointer, and jump shot, and then sits out until the game is all but over with the Celtics down 20. The C's couldn't score in the 2nd half, and Doc keeps diddling around with the same group of guys on the floor, that havent found a way to score ALL YEAR. Nate Robinson was brought in for change, brought in to score, and there he sits on the bench watching the team put in 14 points in the 4th quarter.

Then there are other issues that we all know about such as Ray Allen's playing time, and Rajon Rondo's minutes. Both of these players have jacked up minutes every single game. Rondo only sat out of last nights game for 2 minutes and 50 seconds. No wonder the offense was so slow in the second half. All the energy was used up in the first. When the Celtics were putting it to the Cavs, that might have been a good time to rest him and bring in Mr. Instant Offense (Nate Robinson).

I don't know, it all may seem so theoretical, but I don't know if it is. You've got a guy playing huge minutes in Rasheed Wallace who plays with little to no effort. You've got a guy who was brought in to score, sitting on the bench when the team can't score. Then you've got players playing almost every minute of games and wondering why they are beat in the 2nd half. It is not all the players fault. Doc needs to step forth and take a little heat instead of continually throwing out everyone else who is doing wrong.

I have been of the mindset since the championship that it was still the same Doc who coached the team to a franchise worst record and looks lost when deciding rotations. You give him three hungry all star veterans for a year and they win by themselves. My user name for EPSN Pick'em groups is "DocRiversSucks"

WOW Trav! You are everywhere! I don't know how you find the time to write on here and still as much as you do on Houdini. Kudos man!

Anyway, this was a very nice read. Some of Doc's decisions are questionable but I still think this team has yet to find a true personality. It may be too late to discover one and Doc may be in the way of them "discovering themselves."

Doc is in a very similar situation as Coach Pop out west and I don't think we can really blame either of these guys. I think their team's have yet to find themselves and, again, I dont know if their is time for them to do it before the playoffs. All I can say is, thank-god the remainder of the schedule is kind to the C's. They need whatever help they can get in securing the 2nd or 3rd seed in the East.

Also... think about this one. If the Celtics were out west, they'd be smack in the middle of the Suns and Thunder, tryng to secure the 5th or 6th seed. That's hard to swollow!

Again, nice read.

Lee, if your assessment is accurate, how do you see Doc's ability to coach the team to a 62-20 record last season with a TON on injuries?

Thanks Nick. It is amazing how fast thoughts get down on paper (or in the case the computer) after doing it for about half a year. Gets easier and easier.
I just think Doc needs to let go, and let loose. Let Nate Robinson come in off the bench and be the player he can be. Let Shelden Williams come in and prove what he can do. This is the regular season, we are losing games we should be winning, what really is it going to hurt?
Like you said, I hope the remaining games give them enough time to figure it out. To do that, though, he needs to change it up. Doc can't keep throwing Sheed in regardless. He keeps him in even when he is 2-11, fouling, and playing no defense. It doesn't make sense.
I guess another thing I am looking for is Doc to come out and say, "I have to figure something out." Maybe he has said it and I missed it, but I see him doing a lot of finger pointing. And I am glad to see players like KG finally coming out and taking ownership. "I have to do this. Our team has to do this better." It got to a point earlier in the season where it was a lot of "They had a good game plan and we didn't."

Sorry that comment is like a free write. A lot going on with very little organization haha.
